Making Baby’s Crib Accessible for Parents in Wheelchairs
Posted on 30 May 2016
Trevor Beyna, woodworking artist and full-time firefighter, is a man on a mission to make a basic task of parenthood accessible and more enjoyable for those in wheelchairs. Trevor’s company, Flying Cross Designs, passionately handcrafts beautiful, solid-wood baby cribs that enable parents in wheelchairs to comfortably care for their little ones.
Diagnosed with the precursor to Multiple Sclerosis himself, Trevor finds personal connection to his craft, as he knows that someday he may require the use a wheelchair. While the fate of Trevor’s potential disability is unknown, he’s compassionate about making a positive difference for parents in wheelchairs and their families.
Trevor recently came back to the custom furniture business after a ten-year hiatus. He says a calling from the Lord told him to ‘get back into it’, and therefore he combines the best of both worlds by engaging in the work he loves and filling a gap in the market with an innovative product that adds value to people’s lives.
Trevor set out and designed this revolutionary crib that’s both physically accessible and accessible in price. Trevor’s business model for his company, Flying Cross Designs, is simple. He focuses on keeping consumer costs fair while keeping his business afloat. He knows that his customers are leading busy lives, getting married, and working to support their families independently. Too often people with disabilities are mislabeled as inherent charity cases, a stereotype Trevor combats. Therefore, Trevor’s inclusive business model focuses on providing quality, customized products at a fair price, rather than being a nonprofit.
These brilliantly-crafted cribs start at a very reasonable $1800, including customization. Cribs can be customized in several ways to meet the customer’s needs, including adjusting the overall height and level of hand function. Cribs come in an assortment of nursery-friendly colors (clear, natural maple, or white) and feature a waterproof, non-toxic finish to keep baby happy and healthy.
Trevor will only produce a limited number of cribs per year in order to ensure superior quality and customer satisfaction. He cares so much about his customers that he will even hand deliver cribs to those living within a six to eight-hour radius of his North Carolina shop.
These unique cribs can be shipped anywhere in the US or internationally, although shipping rates may vary. Orders can be ready for delivery in four weeks, or with an a rush option of two weeks for those who either procrastinate, or have an unexpected delivery coming soon! ;)
